Topic: An Interview with the Awards Founder
Having being described as the ‘godfather of small business’, Steve started his journey involved with many community organisations in the Inner West of Sydney. Steve grew up in his family’s bustling corner store and milk bar, selling groceries and fresh produce to the people of Enfield. The family also operated a popular restaurant at Newtown. For Steve and his family, the businesses were not just an income; their whole life revolved around it.
After 28 years of trading, the family businesses were sold, and a great legacy ended without any fanfare or acknowledgement. This is where the idea of a recognition program for small businesses came about and the Inner West Small Business Awards were created in a voluntary capacity within Burwood Jaycees.
Since then, Steve created Precedent Productions, a business that has successfully created and managed a multitude of both state and national award programs, including the Australian Garden Industry Awards, Hardware Industry Awards, Building and Design Awards, Business in the Arts Awards, Australian Child Care Awards and the Seafood Industry Awards. In 1999, Steve also created the Australian Small Business Champion Awards.
The Local Business Awards were established in 1985 and are now presented in 23 regions around NSW. In 2017, 22,000 businesses registered with 5,000 becoming Awards Finalists. Over 12,000 people attended the Presentation Evenings.
Steve continues to be passionate about small business and the people who are committed to servicing their local communities.
